Save Japan Dolphins Coalition Our Save Japan Dolphins Coalition consists of the three American environmental organizations, Earth Island Institute, Animal Welfare Institute, In Defense of Animals, and Japan’s Elsa Nature Conservancy. It is led by Ric O’Barry, former navy diver and trainer of Flipper of the 60’s TV show. He has made many trips to Taiji to film the slaughter and make appeals to officials to stop it. He has been harassed and threatened by the fishermen, but gained their begrudging respect for his courage and persistence, calling him the “samurai dolphin man.” See www.savejapandolphins.org for extensive information, news, and actions we are taking to stop this barbaric slaughter. Earth Island Institute, International Marine Mammal Project (EII/IMMP) is a San Francisco based environmental organization, working to make the oceans safe for all marine mammals. EII’s IMMP was instrumental in establishing Dolphin Safe Tuna, and is the world-wide monitor of tuna companies and fishing fleets to ensure that dolphins are not killed by encircling with tuna nets, or by the use of drift nets. IMMP was also the lead group in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of the orca whale Keiko. See www.earthisland.org/immp/ Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is a Washington DC based organization dedicated to stopping animal abuse and relieving animal suffering for over 50 years. In 1971, AWI launched it’s “Save the Whales” campaign. See www.awionline.org In Defense of Animals (IDA) is a San Rafael, California based organization, founded in 1983 by veterinarian Elliot Katz. IDA fights for the rights, welfare, and habitat of animals through under-cover investigations, rescue operations, grassroots activism, media campaigns, boycotts, lawsuits, and legislation. See www.idausa.org Elsa Nature Conservancy, located in Japan, has been dedicated to the protection of nature, animals and the marine environment since 1976. See http://www.elsaenc.net/index_e.htm |
